Let’s not forget young people!
Abbé Pierre

“If, in spite of my very old age, I wish to speak to all of you today on behalf of my friends from the Foundation, it is because of my firm belief that our young people risk being deprived of the sacred duty to reach their life’s potential, mainly as a result of a lack of work and a lack of housing.
Many have never known the comfort of a room of one’s own, which would allow them to work quietly and to live fully as they discover privacy. Many must carry out their friendships in stairwells as they put up with self-righteous criticisms. Many are held back in their lives by an absence of space, of solitude, of quietness. Many do not find housing to continue their education even when they have a job.”

Abbé Pierre challenges us all with his final cry of anger.
It is a wake-up call to a society whose only ideal presented to young people is that of money and material wealth, a society that is unable to house them or to offer them a job.
And in order to continue bearing witness, this great figure of generosity has passed the torch to the Foundation that bears his name, so it may alert public opinion to the grave situation of young people without work and housing.
